Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old cricket sensation, made his Duleep Trophy debut but struggled, scoring just eight runs. The teenager, representing East Zone against North East Zone in Bengaluru, had been touted as a potential star after his impressive performances in limited-overs cricket. Despite having limited first-class experience, Sooryavanshi was named vice-captain of East Zone.

He had previously played eight first-class matches for Bihar, scoring 207 runs in 12 innings, with a highest score of 93. The young cricketer, who has also excelled in T20 cricket, had the opportunity to prove himself further in the longer format of the game. His appointment as vice-captain added to the pressure, as he was expected to carry the hopes of the team.

The early dismissal will serve as a learning experience for Sooryavanshi as he adjusts to the demands of first-class cricket. East Zone faces North East Zone in a quarter-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with the winner advancing to the semifinals. The Duleep Trophy marks the beginning of India’s 2026-27 domestic season.
