"Canada will match the new tariffs from Washington dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses," Carney said at a press conference on Saturday.

"We cannot accept what they have offered, and we will not give what they are demanding." US tariffs come on top of existing duties. US Trade Representative Jamie Smith confirmed the collapse of negotiations, stating that Canada had rejected the agreement on the agreed terms, according to the Politico platform. Recent demands from Canada had upset the balance achieved in recent days.

Prime Minister Carney had been elected last year on a promise to stand up to US President Donald Trump. Recent polls suggest that the majority of Canadians reject concessions.
