Where Is Thiksey Monastery? US Ambassador Sergio Gor Explores Buddhist Heritage & Cultural Tradition In Ladakh

In a recent visit to Ladakh, US Ambassador Sergio Gor explored the rich Buddhist heritage and cultural traditions of the region. After visiting Pari Mahal and Dal Lake in Jammu & Kashmir, Gor made his way to Leh, the capital of Ladakh, where he paid a visit to the centuries-old Thiksey Monastery.

Located atop a hill in Thiksey, approximately 19 kilometers from Leh, the monastery is a prominent landmark in central Ladakh. Thiksey Monastery, also known as Thiksey Monastery Gompa, is affiliated with the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and is renowned for its striking resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet.

With an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,800 ft), the monastery is a twelve-story complex that houses numerous artifacts of Buddhist art, including stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings, and swords. One of the main attractions within the monastery is the Maitreya Temple, which commemorates the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama in 1970. The temple features a 15-meter (49 ft) high statue of Maitreya, the largest such statue in Ladakh, occupying two stories of the building.

US Ambassador Gor expressed a keen interest in learning about the region's spiritual heritage and cultural traditions during his visit. He spent approximately half an hour exploring the temples and engaging with the monks, who provided him with detailed insights into Ladakh's Buddhist culture. The panoramic views surrounding the monastery left a lasting impression on Gor, who was truly struck by the beauty of the surroundings.
