Texans’ wide receiver additions following Jayden Higgins injury are lazy & not good enough

The Houston Texans found themselves needing to make changes after Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending injury and it seems their initial moves have not been enough. The team signed both veteran NFL receivers, Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones, but neither is believed to be a true replacement for Higgins. This move came about because both players had gone unsigned in late August.

The Texans needed more than just depth to help C.J. Stroud and the offense. Higgins was seen as a major contributor, and his absence has left a significant void in the passing game. It wasn't just a matter of adding another receiver to the Texans' roster. The 2025 second-round pick had made strides in his rookie season and was expected to continue developing.

But a torn ACL suffered during a joint practice with the Raiders forces him to sit out the entire season. Younger players Tank Dell and Jaylin Noel are also facing questions. So, signing experienced veterans like Shepard and Jones may not be enough to fill that gap. While it's not unusual for teams to bring in veterans for depth, the Texans need more than that.

Both Shepard (33) and Jones (31) are nearing the end of their prime. Shepard had a solid season with Tampa Bay, catching 39 passes for 371 yards and one touchdown. Jones, meanwhile, had a decent season with Arizona, catching 12 passes for 183 yards. But those are not the players they are now. The Texans reportedly looked into the trade market for receivers, including Kayshon Boutte and Rashod Bateman, before ultimately signing Shepard and Jones.

It's frustrating, given that the Texans are expected to be a strong contender. C.J. Stroud will be entering a critical season, and losing Higgins requires a serious replacement. The Texans still have time to make more moves, but for now, Shepard and Jones seem more like emergency depth rather than the answers to the biggest problem on Houston's offense.
