Russian attacks on Ukraine kill 2 people a day after deadly shopping mall drone strike

Ukrainian authorities reported at least two people were killed and three wounded in Russian drone and missile strikes overnight, following a deadly shopping mall attack that claimed 16 lives the previous day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed one fatality and one injury in Kyiv when ballistic missiles targeted railway infrastructure.

Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed it had struck a locomotive depot with these missiles. Intensified Russian ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv have been fueled by Ukraine's shortage of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, the only weapon capable of neutralizing such missiles. Russian drone strikes also claimed a life in a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, and wounded nine others, including an attack on a minibus in the regional capital, Zaporizhzhia.

The latest assaults followed a drone strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, on Friday. Kryvyi Rih, Zelenskyy's hometown, has faced multiple Russian attacks, with the deadliest in April 2025 when 20 people, including nine children, perished. Rescue efforts were underway following the Kryvyi Rih attack, which ignited a fire covering 9,000 square meters, equivalent to 10,763 square yards.
