NPP 2026 elections: Nomination window ends with 50 aspirants in race for nine positions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has concluded the nomination period for its 2026 National Officers Elections, receiving a total of 50 candidates vying for nine positions. The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) announced the end of nominations on Saturday, August 22, describing the process as successful and peaceful. This marks the conclusion of the first stage of the party's internal election proceedings, with the subsequent phase focusing on submitting completed nomination forms.

Among the positions, the National Vice Chairperson post garnered the most interest with 13 candidates, followed by the National Organiser role with eight aspirants. Six candidates submitted forms for the National Youth Organiser, while five each are seeking to become National Chairperson and National Nasara Organiser. Additionally, four candidates each are running for General Secretary and National Treasurer, and three candidates are vying for the National Women Organiser position. The National Communications Director position has two candidates.

However, the NOEC emphasizes that purchasing or collecting a nomination form does not guarantee a valid candidacy. To be officially nominated, an aspirant must successfully file their completed form along with the necessary documentation within the stipulated filing period, which will subsequently undergo vetting and other procedures outlined in the party's constitution and election regulations.

Filing of completed forms will commence on Sunday, August 23, 2026, and conclude on Saturday, August 29, 2026. After the filing deadline, nominees will undergo vetting from Monday, August 31, to Thursday, September 3, 2026. The vetting schedule will prioritize presidential aspirants for the National Chairperson, General Secretary, and National Treasurer positions on Monday, followed by National Vice Chairperson aspirants on Tuesday, National Organiser and National Youth Organiser aspirants on Wednesday, and the final group of National Communications Director, National Nasara Organiser, and National Women Organiser aspirants on Thursday.

The NOEC has chosen not to announce a specific date for balloting as it aims to ensure a smooth completion of the filing, vetting, and appeal processes before determining the final list of candidates. They argue that prematurely announcing a balloting date could lead to postponement or suspension if unresolved appeals impact any candidate.

The Committee intends to announce a definitive balloting date once the field of candidates has been finalized and informed aspirants of the date, venue, time, and procedures involved in the election. They are committed to conducting the balloting process transparently and fairly, urging all aspirants and supporters to maintain unity, respect, and confidence in the party's internal democratic procedures.
