Malaysia, Brunei explore single checkpoint to ease border travel

Malaysia and Brunei have agreed in principle to streamline border travel between the two nations, potentially through a single-checkpoint system. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted that current immigration processes are time-consuming, requiring travelers to pass through multiple checkpoints. The two countries have requested their technical committees to expedite the implementation of such a system, according to a joint statement following the 27th Annual Leaders Consultation (ALC-27).

The joint statement emphasizes the importance of resolving the land boundary dispute, particularly Sector F-G, based on the watershed principle. Both countries aim to jointly determine a single watershed and complete its survey and demarcation by May 31, 2027. As of now, 264.8km of the land boundary has been jointly surveyed and demarcated, representing around 50% of the total. The remaining work is set to be completed by 2034.

Beyond border management, the leaders discussed enhancing cross-border cooperation on security matters, including sharing information and designating contact points to combat smuggling and other illegal activities. They also expressed support for continued discussions on commercial rice cultivation in Sarawak to improve food security. Additionally, progress on the Brunei-Sarawak power interconnection project, part of the Asean Power Grid, was welcomed by both sides.
