Last-second heroics lift Muncie Central football to victory over Delta

Muncie needed a high school football game more than it ever has, and the Muncie Central Bearcats and Delta Eagles delivered on Friday, Aug. 21. The Bearcats secured a thrilling 23-22 victory over the Eagles, clinching it in the final second of the game. The competition came during a difficult time for both communities, still recovering from recent flooding.

Muncie Central coach Kyle Buresh emphasized the importance of the game, stating, "Everybody's going through stuff right now, but we had however long this game was to just be entrenched in it and go play this football game." Junior quarterback Mason Ferguson, who led the Bearcats, said, "Coach just said, 'Go make a play,' and I put the team on my back and (Carlos Echols Jr.) helped me out."

Junior kicker Toby Gruver sealed the victory with a successful extra point attempt after Ferguson's game-winning touchdown catch by Echols. Delta coach Billy Lynch praised the Bearcats, saying, "All the credit in the world to Muncie Central, what a class act their players and staff are."
