Eskom confirms City Power settles R5.25bln electricity debt in full

City Power has paid off its outstanding electricity debt of more than R5.25 billion to Eskom, as confirmed by the energy giant. The debt settlement occurred following a mediation process overseen by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The City of Johannesburg and Eskom jointly announced the full settlement of the overdue electricity debt.

Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Dada Morero, expressed their satisfaction with the resolution. Eskom stated that the final payment of over R1.8 billion was received on Friday. The full settlement led to the termination of Eskom's Promotion of Administrative Justice Act process, which began on May 17.

The city's electricity supplier was informed that it would either see reduced or terminated electricity supply points in the Johannesburg Metro region.
