EcoFlow’s Stream home batteries arrive to power the UK’s plug-in solar boom — but installation still isn’t DIY

EcoFlow has introduced its latest home battery units, the Stream Series, to the UK market. These batteries can be connected to a range of solar configurations, allowing users to make better use of their solar energy. However, installation must still be carried out by a qualified electrician.

The Stream batteries come in a compact 5kWh model, capable of handling up to 5,000W of solar input and 3,000W of electricity output. This capacity is sufficient to run appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. For those needing more energy storage, additional units can be added as necessary.

Despite their size and power, the Stream batteries are lightweight (weighing only 45 kilograms or under 100 pounds) and compact, making them easy to install in various locations such as garages or utility rooms.

EcoFlow's Justin Tilley emphasized that the goal is to make the transition to smarter home energy accessible to more homeowners. He noted that while people want to maximize their solar investment, they also seek technology that is easy to comprehend, integrate, and scale with their evolving needs.

These batteries are equipped to power household appliances. With the legal availability of plug-in solar kits in the UK starting August 27, the country is on the verge of a significant shift in home energy generation. However, without a battery installed, any surplus solar energy produced will be lost.

The Stream Series addresses this issue, although the installation process is not as straightforward as the solar panels themselves. Nevertheless, there is optimism that plug-in batteries could eventually receive the necessary regulatory approvals.

Key features of the Stream batteries include a lifespan of 15 years, the ability to endure 10,000 charging cycles, an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance (indicating robust weatherproofing), and a 10-year warranty. They can be monitored and managed through a companion app that provides comprehensive control and diagnostic tools. Additionally, these batteries can function as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), automatically stepping in during power outages.

Preorders for the EcoFlow Stream home battery are now open on the EcoFlow website, with early bird pricing starting at £1,499. This introductory rate is set to expire on October 7, after which the batteries are expected to begin shipping.
