Dale Morris, Nashville Manager Who Guided Careers of Alabama & Kenny Chesney, Dies at 89

Dale Morris, a renowned Nashville artist manager who shaped the careers of country music superstars Alabama and Kenny Chesney, has passed away at the age of 89. Morris died peacefully in his sleep on August 21, though the specific cause of death was not disclosed. Clint Higham, president of Morris Higham Management, described Morris as living a "big, bold, beautiful, blessed life" and expressed deep sorrow over the end of an era.

Morris began his music industry journey as a songwriter, crafting Johnny Paycheck's 1967 hit "Don't Monkey With Another Monkey's Monkey" before shifting focus to management. In 1979, he met Alabama at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where they went on to achieve an unprecedented 33 No. 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.

In the early 1990s, Morris established a professional relationship with Kenny Chesney, who would become a Country Music Hall of Famer and one of the highest-grossing country touring artists of all time with 33 No. 1 songs on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. Morris mentored various other artists, including Martina McBride, Barbara Mandrell, Jake Owen, Old Dominion, and Walker County.

His business partner, Higham, praised Morris for his ability to spot potential in people and inspire them to reach beyond their perceived limits. Morris received the T.J. Martell Foundation's Tony Martell Lifetime Entertainment Achievement Award in 2014. He was married for 68 years to his wife Earline, and survived by his daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and five grandchildren.

A celebration of life is planned for later this fall, with details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, Morris' family is requesting donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
