Her brother, Preston, said in an interview with CNN that his mother taught her American exceptionalism as the right view of the world, and Hafer could not escape that fantasy. Preston also revealed that Hafer is a supporter of the Sandinista anti-imperialist revolutionary movement, which he publicly shared on Facebook. Melania Trump, Trump's wife, was seen in a public appearance on her 20th birthday, attempting to defuse the controversy between the president and a young female deputy.

MSNBC reporter Mika Harvani described Hafer as Trump's "comfort blanket" in a recent MSNBC interview. Senator Joe Manchin criticized Hafer's role as an aide to Trump after he made a statement about visiting her and wanting to travel with her.
