Western leaders condemn Israel’s ‘unacceptable’ E1 settlement project in West Bank

Seven nations have criticized Israel's controversial E1 settlement project in the West Bank, urging the country to cease its expansion and warning businesses of potential repercussions if they participate in construction tenders. The statement from the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada deems Israel's decision to release tenders as "unacceptable" and expresses concern that it will "undermine the two-state solution" and "further weaken Israel's international standing."

The E1 settlement scheme, which would construct approximately 1,200 homes on land sought by Palestinians for a state, has been under consideration for over 20 years but was previously halted due to US pressure during prior administrations. The announcement of tenders for these homes, with a deadline set before October's general election, has intensified tensions in the region.

The group also cautioned businesses against engaging in the project, stating they should be aware of potential legal and reputational consequences, including involvement in breaches of international law. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband summoned Israel's charge d'affaires to discuss the matter and has indicated that the UK government will impose targeted sanctions against Israelis involved in illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank and Gaza. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed Miliband's statement as having a "patronizing tone."
