Walmart Tap to Pay Rollout Begins Monday

Walmart will commence enabling tap to pay at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting Monday, August 24, as part of a nationwide rollout that aims to be completed by the end of 2026 and include fuel stations by mid-2027, the company announced in a press release on Friday, August 21. The retailer highlighted that tap to pay provides customers and members with a familiar and convenient payment method using contactless options such as cards, phones, or smartwatches when making purchases.

Google confirmed that shoppers at Walmart and Sam’s Club will be able to utilize Google Pay for tap to pay transactions once the feature is rolled out. Google Pay users can add their preferred card to Google Wallet before proceeding to checkout. Walmart also noted that customers can add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards to their digital wallets for added convenience.

OnePay, a consumer FinTech company, further expanded its support for Apple Pay, enabling customers to add their OnePay CashRewards Card to Apple Wallet and utilize Apple Pay at select Walmart U.S. locations. The company plans to extend Apple Pay support to its OnePay Builder Card later in the fall. According to a PYMNTS Intelligence report titled "Apple Pay @11: Usage is Up, but Competitors are Gaining Ground," more than 30% of shoppers now utilize mobile wallets in stores weekly, with 16% specifically using Apple Pay.
