US plans to pay $850 million of the $5 billion it owes the United Nations

The United States has notified Congress of its intention to pay $850 million towards the $5 billion it owes the United Nations, the largest such payment under the Trump administration. The State Department plans to allocate $725 million towards the regular U.N. budget and $125 million towards peacekeeping missions in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The U.S. is currently $5 billion behind on its dues, with $2 billion owed for the regular budget and $3 billion for peacekeeping operations. In February, the Trump administration made a $160 million payment following warnings from U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres about the institution's imminent financial collapse. The administration has been pushing for reforms at the U.N., causing cuts to programs and services, and has withdrawn from several U.N. organizations, including the World Health Organization and UNESCO.
