Sweden: One killed in school sword attack

A school in Fagersta, central Sweden, witnessed a violent incident on Friday, resulting in the death of one individual and injuring multiple others. Police reported that a 18-year-old man armed with a sword initiated the attack. The suspect was subsequently shot and taken into custody, eliminating any ongoing threat to the public.

Earlier, authorities had initially stated that three people, including two severely injured, were wounded, but later revised the count to include one fatality. The Brinellskola, a secondary school with approximately 450 students aged 16 to 20, was targeted. The school had recently reopened following the summer break. Public broadcaster SVT observed multiple emergency vehicles surrounding the school, indicating the gravity of the situation.

The municipality ordered the lockdown of other schools and public buildings in the vicinity as a precautionary measure. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed condolences, stating that the police were conducting an intensive investigation. Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson also voiced her sorrow, emphasizing that such violence deeply affects the entire nation.

This incident adds to a series of high-profile attacks on educational institutions in Sweden, including a 2025 attack at an adult education center in Orebro and a 2022 stabbing incident at a Malmo high school.
