Sweden: One killed in school sword attack

On Friday, a school in Fagersta, Sweden was the scene of a violent attack carried out by an armed individual. The suspect, an 18-year-old man, was shot and taken into custody by police after the incident. The attack resulted in multiple injuries, with two boys aged between 12 and 17 being hospitalized. One person tragically lost their life in the incident.

The secondary school, known as Brinellskola, which houses approximately 450 students aged 16 to 20, had recently reopened following the summer break. Public broadcaster SVT reported a significant response to the scene, with ambulances, police vehicles, and a police helicopter on the premises. Other schools and public buildings in the region were placed under lockdown.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed condolences, stating that the police were conducting an intensive investigation. Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson also commented on the severity of the event, emphasizing the impact such violence has on the entire country. Sweden has experienced several significant attacks on educational institutions in recent years, including a 2025 incident at an adult education center in Orebro and a 2022 attack at a high school in Malmo.
