States get special N435bn for security, infrastructure

State governments across Nigeria have received N435 billion in funding for infrastructure and security purposes since January 2026, according to budget performance reports. This intervention is separate from the regular Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations and is classified under the "State Infrastructure and Security" code 11010313 in state financial records.

Between January and June 2026, 29 states reported recording revenues under this funding window. The intervention comes as Nigeria faces significant challenges with security issues and a large infrastructure deficit. Despite the government's N145 billion Safe Schools Initiative and recent efforts to bolster security measures, the scale of insecurity has led to increased pressure on state governments to invest in both security and critical infrastructure.

In addition to the N435 billion in dedicated funding, states also reported receiving N1.6 trillion in infrastructure and security projects between March 2024 and May 2025. The total funding represents nearly 10% of the N4.55 trillion federation allocation to states and 20.71% of the N2.10 trillion generated internally by these states during the same period.
