Several injured after crane collapses in Mumbai’s Kurla

At least 10 individuals, including two children, sustained injuries after a segment of a hydraulic crane at an under-construction building in Mumbai’s Kurla area collapsed. This incident occurred early Friday morning and resulted in damage to several nearby structures and vehicles. The Chunnabhatti police were alerted at around 4 am regarding the crane collapse.

Upon arrival, they rescued several people and transported them to local hospitals. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the crane was being utilized to elevate an excavator to the top of a 17-story under-construction building, where construction firm Sunny Company was engaged in demolition activities. During this operation, a portion of the crane fell, causing damage to overhead railway wires, adjacent structures, and a road in Qureshi Nagar, as well as the compound wall of a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) building and three parked vehicles in Samrat Ashok Nagar.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated that the demolition work was scheduled for Building No 1, Bhandari Metallurgy, Kurla. They noted that while the crane was being positioned, it tilted and fell onto an adjoining structure. The soft ground at the site is believed to have compromised the crane's stability.

MMRDA promptly dispatched the necessary equipment and personnel to remove the fallen crane, securing the site and implementing precautionary measures. The Authority pledged to provide medical care and support to the injured. Among the 10 injured, two were admitted to Sion Hospital, and two were transferred to Kurla Bhabha Hospital.

Dr Navin, an Assistant Medical Officer at Sion Hospital, revealed that a three-month-old infant and a 10-year-old boy were among the hospitalized, while the remaining individuals were between 19 and 63 years old and in stable condition. Raju Gaud, 35, and Aarti Gaud, 30, were also admitted to Kurla Bhabha Hospital and are currently stable.

The Chunnabhatti police confirmed they will file a First Information Report (FIR), attributing the incident to the operator's negligence.
