PICS | Two Mexicans among five arrested in R600m crystal meth lab bust in Limpopo

Two Mexicans were among five people arrested during a massive bust of a crystal meth lab worth over half a billion rand on a farm in Musina, Limpopo. The operation, conducted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security, and various South African law enforcement agencies, resulted in the seizure of an estimated R600 million worth of drugs, laboratory equipment, and cash.

The suspects, who include two Mexicans, two Zimbabweans, and one Malawian, are accused of manufacturing and possessing illicit drugs. The raid was the product of a two-month investigation targeting the industrial-scale production of crystal methamphetamine. Limpopo Hawks head Major General Gopz Govender emphasized that the operation aimed to dismantle the infrastructure behind the drug trade, and that their efforts would extend to tracking down those involved in the criminal enterprise.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers underscored the importance of preventing communities from becoming mere markets for drug syndicates. The five suspects are scheduled to appear in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges of manufacturing and possessing illicit drugs, with additional charges potentially forthcoming.
