Mourinho has a plan for Madrid’s superstar trio – and it starts with defending

Real Madrid's new coach Jose Mourinho has outlined a strategy for his team's star trio of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham ahead of their La Liga opener against Espanyol. Mourinho acknowledged the challenge of balancing attack and defense while featuring all three players, admitting that previous coaches had struggled to find the right arrangement.

He emphasized that the trio are "three players of great quality" and are "incompatible positions" tactically, but assured that they will feel comfortable on the pitch when all three play together. Mourinho stressed that the team must prioritize defense this season, stating "we have to defend with 11 players" if facing pressure from opponents.

He also warned that the players will face frustration during his tenure, as he cannot start a game with 15 players on the field. Despite previous dressing room tensions, Mourinho stated that there is no bad blood between the current players, describing the situation as "normality, friendship, and it’s like nothing happened." The Portuguese coach aimed to start from scratch with the team, focusing on their work ethic and ensuring they navigate moments of frustration constructively.

Mourinho described his second stint at Real Madrid as a positive experience, calling the feeling of pressure "adrenaline" rather than stress.
