How Kavalan Changed the World of Whisky

Taiwan's Yilan region, often referred to as the "city of water" for its pristine meltwater, is home to Kavalan, a distillery that has revolutionized the world of whisky. Founded in 2005, Kavalan has transformed Taiwan into one of the most exciting whisky-producing regions. CEO Albert Lee's vision for the distillery was to create a uniquely Taiwanese style, drawing on the island's climate and terroir.

Kavalan's whisky, characterized by its tropical-fruit flavors, is produced rapidly thanks to Yilan's hot, humid climate, which accelerates the aging process. The distillery's CEO, Albert Lee, spent years researching whisky production overseas, learning from chemists, blenders and industry veterans, and working closely with whisky consultant Dr. Jim Swan.

This knowledge allowed Kavalan to develop its own style, distinct from Scotland and Japan. Today, Kavalan is one of the world's most awarded whisky distilleries, with over 1,000 international accolades. The latest accolade was at the 2026 Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition, where its Solist Oloroso Sherry Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky won the Best of the Best Single Malt Whisky award.

Kavalan's newest expressions, Blender's Reserve No. 1 and No. 2, are specifically designed for younger consumers in Japan. These whiskies, launched exclusively in Japan on August 5, are rich in tropical fruit flavors and offer a sophisticated drinking experience, catering to the changing tastes of younger drinkers.
