Germany investigates arms cache found in woods near Berlin

German authorities discovered a cache of handguns in a forest near Berlin, which they believe was intended for assassinations allegedly on behalf of Russia, according to recent reports. One suspect was arrested in Romania, and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed Germany's cooperation with Romanian counterparts regarding the suspect's potential extradition.

Dobrindt stated that the investigation is targeting espionage and planning violent attacks that could endanger the state. He also mentioned that authorities cannot rule out foreign powers being involved. The suspect, described as a low-level agent, was unaware of the command above him. Additionally, other operatives, including a Kazakh citizen, were detained this year for similar reasons.

The guns found contained signs indicating they were placed there on behalf of Russia's intelligence services. Police disabled the weapons but left them at the site for surveillance as the location was presumed to be avoided by the alleged perpetrators. Dobrindt acknowledged that Germany faces a high threat level, including hybrid warfare such as espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert operations by foreign powers.

While Russia has denied involvement, German lawmakers suspect Russia's responsibility, with US media reports suggesting Russia may be behind the drone incident at Leipzig Airport. The Russian embassy in Berlin dismissed the allegations as a fabricated provocation.
