JUST IN: FG declares public holiday for Eid ul Mawlid

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Tuesday, August 25, 2026, will be a public holiday to observe Eid ul Mawlid, the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. This decision was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani. Tunji-Ojo expressed his congratulations to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world, urging them to use this occasion to reflect on the values of the Prophet Muhammad, such as compassion, humility, and service to humanity.

He emphasized that these qualities are crucial for the nation at present and encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of their religious beliefs, to contemplate these virtues. The minister called for prayers for peace, unity, and national cohesion, emphasizing that building a peaceful society is a shared responsibility. He also reminded citizens to celebrate Eid with restraint, mutual respect, and consideration for one another.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated the administration's commitment to safeguarding lives and property and promoting peace and stability nationwide. He urged Nigerians to continue supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing national unity and peaceful coexistence among people of diverse faiths and backgrounds.
