British PM Burnham tells terror attack victims ‘you are not alone’

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to discuss plans for a permanent memorial honouring the victims and survivors of terrorism, marking the UK's inaugural National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism. The day aims to recognize those lives lost and survivors profoundly impacted by attacks on British soil and overseas.

At the London ceremony, Burnham expressed his deep admiration for survivors and their families, stating that the government would do more to support them, acknowledging that too often, victims have not received the support they deserve. Drawing from his personal experiences with the Manchester Arena attack in 2017 and the Heaton Park Synagogue attack last year, Burnham emphasized the unique resilience needed to cope with the trauma of terrorism.

He highlighted how the consequences of terrorism linger "years and decades," warning that resilience involves finding strength to continue despite profound loss. The ceremony also saw the launch of a support hub offering trauma-informed assistance and a free helpline to anyone affected by terrorist incidents. Survivors like Thelma Stober, who endured the 7/7 London bombings in 2005, stressed that resilience is not about forgetting but about maintaining the strength to carry on.

Cheryl Stollery, whose husband was killed in the 2015 Sousse terrorist attack, shared her daily remembrance of her late husband, emphasizing that his memory lives on through them. Paul Price, who suffered life-changing injuries and lost his partner in the Manchester Arena bombing, described the irrevocable changes to his life and the ongoing challenges he faces.
