2027: INEC vows to build on Osun election gains

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to enhance its election conduct in the 2027 general elections, following positive feedback about the Osun State governorship poll's outcome. Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC's Information/Voter Education Committee, made the promise at a gathering in Abuja with a delegation consisting of political parties, civil society organizations, community leaders, and other democratic stakeholders.

The delegation commended INEC's Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, and the commission for the successful 15th August Osun governorship election. Haruna assured the group that INEC remained committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, stating that the electoral body would continue to improve on its performance. He added that the commission would build on the Osun experience before the 2027 general elections, promising an improvement over the previous election.

The delegation, led by Obed Agu, visited INEC to express their appreciation for the commission's conduct of the Osun election, which renewed their confidence in the electoral process. Agu noted the significant improvements in voter turnout and real-time results management during the election. The group urged INEC to sustain and improve on this standard in 2027, emphasizing the importance of equal treatment of voters and political parties, while maintaining the commission's independence and transparency.
