What to expect? Reveal time set for GWM’s new 3.0-litre turbodiesel
New internally named GW4F30 four-cylinder oil-burner will debut in both the P500 bakkie and Tank 500 SUV.
Great Wall Motors (GWM) has introduced the launch window for its new 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine in the South African market. The engine, internally known as GW4F30, boasts a 2 993 cc displacement and was initially projected for a 2027 debut but will now be launched in 2024. Despite being initially thought to be a six-cylinder, the GW4F30 is a four-cylinder engine, similar to the Isuzu D-Max.
Like the existing 2.4-litre unit, the 3.0-litre engine will also share the 3.0T badging. Conversely, in markets where the diesel is not available, the 3.0T will denote a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine producing 265kW/500Nm. This diesel engine will power the P500 bakkie and Tank 500 SUV, delivering 170kW/620Nm, which is 14 kW less than the 3.0-litre Lion turbodiesel V6 in Ford Ranger and Everest, and Volkswagen Amarok, but offers 20 Nm more torque.
The 3.0T will be the second diesel engine for the P500, following the 2.4T in Thailand, and marks the first for the Tank 500 in South Africa. The diesel engine could potentially replace the cancelled plug-in hybrid, which was expected to arrive in South Africa this year. While the pricing details are yet to be announced, the P500 and Tank 500 with the 3.0T engines are expected to be unveiled simultaneously in September.
