Venables agrees to 2-year contract extension after leading Oklahoma to College Football Playoff

Norman, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables has signed a two-year contract extension, following the team's successful run to the College Football Playoff last season. The extension, which will run until January 31, 2032, was announced by athletics director Roger Denny and requires approval from the OU Board of Regents, scheduled to meet next month.

Denny expressed his admiration for Venables, highlighting his ability to foster a strong team culture and build trust with players. Venables, now in his fifth season as Oklahoma's head coach, guided the Sooners to a 10-3 record and their first playoff appearance since 2019. The team secured the No. 8 seed and faced Alabama in the first round, ultimately losing 34-24.

This marked the second consecutive 10-win season under Venables, who also led the 2026 team to a No. 10 ranking in the AP Top 25. The 2025 defense, under Venables' guidance as the play-caller, was among the best in the nation, ranking sixth in yards allowed per game (272.5) and seventh in points allowed per game (15.5). Denny emphasized the importance of stability in the face of college sports disruptions, stating that Venables' proven track record made him the ideal candidate for the extension.
