Umno to discuss whether to go solo or cooperate in Melaka polls at Aug 28 MT meeting

MELAKA, Aug 20 — Umno’s political stance regarding cooperation or going solo in the Melaka state election will be deliberated upon at the Umno Supreme Council (MT) meeting on August 28. The meeting, chaired by President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, will also explore the best approach to secure Barisan Nasional’s (BN) victory in the state election.

Dr Ahmad Maslan, an MT member, stated that a final decision on BN or Umno’s political strategy in Melaka, including potential cooperation with other parties, has not been finalized. He noted that discussions in the media and statements by Umno leaders in Melaka have revolved around BN’s potential relationships with the People’s Alliance (PH) and the New Economic Policy (PN).

Deputy Works Minister urged all parties to adhere to any decision made by the party concerning the Melaka state election, as the adopted political approach by BN should consider the specific circumstances and suitability of each state. The mandate of the Melaka state government expires on December 31, and BN secured 21 out of the 28 seats in the 15th Melaka state election, while PH took five seats and PN claimed two.

However, the state executive council also includes PH assemblymen, mirroring the federal Unity Government's composition.
