Siaya National Polytechnic to train e-mobility technicians

Siaya National Polytechnic has unveiled an innovative electric mobility training curriculum designed to train technicians in servicing and repairing electric motorcycles, vehicles, and other equipment. Principal Felix Odhiambo announced that the curriculum has received approval from the Technical and Vocational Education Training Authority (TVET-A) and is set to transform vocational training as Kenya moves towards a green economy.

In collaboration with Songa Mobility, students will learn how to repair electric vehicles, tricycles, and bicycles, moving away from fossil fuel-powered transportation. The course aims to equip students with clean energy skills and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, steering the country towards a cleaner energy future. Odhiambo urged rural mechanics to take advantage of the new curriculum and upgrade their skills.

The polytechnic plans to become a leading center for e-mobility training, with a modern virtual laboratory expected to be established within a year. The first cohort will begin Level Four training in January 2027, with two to three-month modules followed by mentorship. Trainer Esau Malala emphasized that the program will help Jua Kali mechanics improve their skills in repairing and maintaining electric vehicles, ensuring they stay ahead in the evolving automotive industry.

Songa Mobility's Alvin Nyakinya highlighted the partnership, stating that trainees will gain hands-on experience using the company's electric tricycles and bicycles equipped with internet-connected systems during the training period.
