#SHOWBIZ: Raintown Film Festival breaks new trailblazing student-industry collaboration
TAIPING: The Raintown Film Festival now presents Raintown Horizons: The IACT X WCE Student Cinematic Showcase, an initiative that bridges professional filmmaking, education and storytelling.
Taiping's Raintown Film Festival has launched an innovative collaboration called Raintown Horizons: The IACT X WCE Student Cinematic Showcase. This program aims to bridge professional filmmaking, education, and storytelling by bringing together 46 student filmmakers from eight production teams. The challenge was to create original short films within a span of seven weeks between June and July this year, incorporating the expressway as a visual metaphor for the connection between heritage and modernity.
The initiative is a joint effort between the Raintown Film Festival, IACT College, and West Coast Expressway (WCE). Timothy Chan, CEO of IACT College, emphasized the importance of creative education extending beyond classrooms, giving students real-world experiences and decisions to face while still learning. He added that this collaboration grants them the freedom to discover their unique voices and connect with audiences and stakeholders.
WCE CEO Lyndon Alfred Felix highlighted the real-world challenge posed to students in crafting authentic Malaysian stories. The industry provides the platform, while academia nurtures their talent. Ain Syafiqah Rosdi, supervising lecturer at IACT College, expressed her students' commitment to overcoming obstacles with professional dedication and discovering their authentic filmmaking voices.
The showcase features four selected films, including "Because," a poignant conversation addressing emotional distance; "Before We Become Strangers," a bittersweet road trip; "Never Let Me Go," which explores an e-hailing driver's struggles in personal relationships; and "Nevertheless," a light-hearted yet touching tale of best friends facing a vehicle breakdown.
Filmed along rural routes, coastal roads, and heritage sites, the project underscores the intersection of infrastructure, tourism, education, and the creative economy.
The final selections will screen at the Raintown Film Festival in Taiping next month, with the awards ceremony taking place at 6:30 PM on September 6 at Taiping Mall's Paragon Cinemas.
