September ranks among Saudi Arabia’s hottest months: What climate data reveals

Jeddah reports that September is among Saudi Arabia's hottest months, based on climate data from the National Center for Meteorology. September's average temperature is 30.8°C, with an average maximum of 38.3°C and minimum of 23.27°C, according to the 1991–2020 climate baseline. This places September as the fourth-highest temperature month for all three measures.

September is typically the hottest in western and eastern regions, while southwestern highlands are the coolest. The year 2023 saw the highest average maximum temperature for September, reaching 39.57°C. In comparison, 2021 had the lowest average maximum temperature at 37.92°C.

The most extreme September temperatures occurred in Makkah and Rafha, with both reaching 49.4°C. Other stations, such as Jeddah, Yanbu, and Al-Qaisumah, also recorded extreme heat. Rainfall in September is mostly concentrated in the south, southwest, and western parts of the Kingdom, except for coastal regions. The average September rainfall is 1.64 mm, making it the second-driest month of the year.

Makkah receives the highest normal September rainfall at 9.9 mm, while Khamis Mushait and Sharurah are the driest, with 3.4 mm and 2.3 mm respectively. Notable rainfall events include Taif's 51.6 mm on September 17, 1997, and Makkah's 40.4 mm on September 11, 2015.
