New U.S. ambassador meets American biz community in S. Korea

Michelle Park Steel, the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to South Korea, held her first meeting with key American business leaders in the country on Thursday. This gathering, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM), occurred just as Steel took up her role earlier this month. The primary topic of conversation centered around the prospects and obstacles faced by U.S. enterprises operating in South Korea, as reported by AMCHAM.

The dialogue also explored potential avenues for cooperation between the U.S. Embassy and AMCHAM. This collaboration is set to encompass the Freedom 250 initiatives, which celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. Steel reiterated her dedication to collaborating closely with AMCHAM, with the shared goal of resolving issues that U.S. businesses encounter, enhancing the business climate, and uncovering fresh opportunities for the U.S. economy.

AMCHAM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Kim expressed AMCHAM's enthusiasm for collaborating with Steel. Kim highlighted how their ongoing partnership on Freedom 250 initiatives will aid in supporting American businesses, fostering bilateral trade and investments, and advancing their shared goals. Steel's selection marks the second time a Korean-American individual will serve as U.S. ambassador to South Korea, concluding an 18-month gap in the position following Philip Goldberg's departure from the post in January 2025.
