NACA warns misinformation, stigma could derail HIV prevention efforts

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has issued a warning that misinformation, stigma, and sensational reporting could hinder Nigeria's efforts to curb new HIV infections. NACA's Director-General, Dr Temitope Ilori, emphasized the importance of accurate and evidence-based information during a national training for journalists and social media influencers in Lagos.

Ilori stressed that journalists and influencers play a crucial role in shaping public conversations and reaching millions of Nigerians, and urged them to provide accurate and stigma-free information about HIV prevention options such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). She warned that inaccurate information could create fear, reinforce stigma, and discourage people from accessing HIV prevention services.

NACA and the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued the warning as Nigeria implements its National Strategic Plan for HIV and AIDS 2026-2030, which focuses on sustainability, innovation, stronger partnerships, and community engagement.
