Mourinho begins second Real Madrid reign with Barca in his sights

Mourinho s second stint at Real Madrid kicks off in Barcelona this weekend as the Spanish club hosts Espanyol in La Liga. The veteran Portuguese coach returns to the club after 16 years, with the same goal of dethroning Barcelona as Spain's leading team. Mourinho aims to rekindle the intensity and attitude that characterized his first Madrid era from 2010 to 2013, when he led the team to two consecutive Champions League titles.

However, the 15-time European champions have faced internal challenges, with player-coach relations and on-pitch performances conflicting over the years. Mourinho, now 63, emphasizes his maturity and control, vowing to instill a culture of work, responsibility, and ambition among his players. Real Madrid has bolstered their squad this summer, signing high-profile players like Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva, and Marc Cucurella.

While Diomande's attacking prowess is notable, it remains to be seen if Silva can bridge the midfield gap left by the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The rivalry between Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, which defined his first Madrid reign, is expected to intensify this time around as Real Madrid faces Barcelona in their first Clasico of the season.
