LSU opens the Lane Kiffin era at No. 11, immersed in intrigue with a schedule full of opportunities

In the wake of a high-profile shakeup, LSU begins Lane Kiffin's tenure as the 11th-ranked Tigers, brimming with intrigue and prospects for success. The preseason ranking comes despite a disappointing year under former coach Brian Kelly, which culminated in his dismissal and a subsequent change in athletic directors, all under the watchful eye of Governor Jeff Landry.

Kiffin, who previously coached Mississippi, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and emphasized the team's potential to contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Kiffin's first move was a comprehensive roster overhaul, incorporating over 40 new players, including a highly-rated transfer class. Defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who had been considered a top candidate for a head coaching position at Tulane, remained on board after receiving a raise to deter him from seeking another opportunity. Baker credited Kiffin's offensive strategy and defensive prowess for his decision to stay, stating that the ultimate goal is to bring a national championship to LSU.

The Tigers' schedule is packed with nine SEC games, including clashes against Texas, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss. Kiffin's offensive style is known for its tempo and high scoring, offering QB Sam Leavitt, a transfer from Arizona State, ample opportunities with a cast of skilled receivers such as Jayce Brown, Jackson Harris, and Winston Watkins Jr., as well as preseason AP All-America tight end Trey’Dez Green.

LSU's secondary has been hailed as potentially the best in the nation, featuring returning cornerback D.J. Pickett and PJ Woodland, safety Ty Benefield, and transfer Harold Perkins.

However, weaknesses remain, particularly in the offensive line. LSU's offense struggled last season, ranking 124th nationally in rushing yards, and allowed 29 sacks. Kiffin aims to address this deficiency by bringing in transfers who will join two returning starters: center Braelin Moore and tackle Weston Davis. The quarterback room is bolstered by Leavitt, transfer Jordan Seaton, and incoming freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

The defensive line receives a boost from transfer edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, along with several incoming freshmen linemen such as Deuce Geralds, Richard Anderson, and Lamar Brown.
