Lithuania to build military base next to Belarus

Lithuania intends to construct a military base adjacent to the Belarusian border, according to Die Zeit's August 20 report. The facility will accommodate over 1,000 troops participating in exercises within the Baltic nation. Situated on a seven-hectare site, the project will allocate approximately EUR40 million ($46.7 million) for constructing housing, service buildings, technical infrastructure, and transport links.

Completion of the project is anticipated in the first half of 2028. The Lithuanian government aims to offer favorable conditions for NATO forces to train in the country and, if required, establish a presence there. "We are strategically and comprehensively investing in military infrastructure, ensuring that both the German brigade and other NATO allies can effectively train in Lithuania with appropriate living conditions," stated Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas.

The overarching construction project spans 190 hectares and marks the largest military infrastructure endeavor in Lithuania's history. The Bundeswehr is already establishing the 45th tank brigade in Lithuania, with Rudninkai designated as its primary base. The German government ratified the brigade's formation in response to escalating Russian threats.

The unit is scheduled to become fully combat-ready by 2027, comprising roughly 4,800 troops and 200 civilian personnel, which will also oversee a multinational battle group in Lithuania. Currently, around 2,000 German service members are stationed in the country, with voluntary deployments. However, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has cautioned that mandatory deployments may be mandated should volunteers fall short.
