Lagos revives monthly cadet table tennis tourney

The Lagos State Table Tennis Association has reintroduced its monthly cadet tournament, commencing on August 23 at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. The reestablishment aims to identify and foster young table tennis talent across the state through consistent competition and developmental opportunities.

LSTTA Chairman Tunji Lawal emphasized that regular competition is vital for young players' growth and potential realization. "Players need regular competition to develop and fulfill their potential," he stated. The monthly event will enable cadets to build confidence, enhance their match temperament, and acquire valuable competitive experience from a tender age.

Notable players like Matthew Kuti, Muiz Adegoke, and Sultan Agunbiade rose through similar developmental programs before achieving national team status. Lawal highlighted that their progress underscores the significance of offering young players a steady competitive platform instead of relying solely on sporadic major championships.

The tournament will also offer coaches the chance to evaluate players under pressure and instill discipline and dedication among the cadets. While competing for medals and recognition, outstanding performers will receive closer scrutiny from the association and may be considered for Lagos State team selection. Lawal expressed that as the program expands and gains more sponsorship, enhanced incentives such as equipment and developmental support will be provided to outstanding players.

The ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable pathway for table tennis development in Lagos and Nigeria. Lawal emphasized, "This tournament is not just about producing monthly winners. It is about discovering tomorrow's champions."
