L&T Wins Large Dubai Airport Order, Automated People Mover System To Support Major Expansion

Mumbai: The construction firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in collaboration with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has been awarded a substantial contract to construct an Automated People Mover system at Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai. Though the exact contract value remains undisclosed, L&T categorizes orders between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore as “large.”

The project encompasses the first phase of the airport’s expansion and is being overseen by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and implemented by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects. Al Maktoum International Airport is slated to become the world’s largest airport upon completion, with an anticipated capacity of 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight per annum.

The MHI-L&T consortium will deliver the Automated People Mover system as a turnkey solution, encompassing design, construction, equipment supply, testing, commissioning, and operational preparations. Within the design-and-build contract, L&T will oversee key aspects of the project, including guideways, direct-current traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications systems.

Additional responsibilities of L&T will involve onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform screen doors, and depot equipment. The project necessitates intricate execution, as L&T highlighted the involvement of sophisticated technology, multiple system interfaces, and stringent execution timelines. Ramkumar S, executive vice-president and head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, emphasized the company’s engineering expertise and commitment to safety and quality standards.

MHI will contribute its experience in Automated People Mover systems to the endeavor. L&T’s expansion into West Asia, including integrated rail-system projects for Mumbai Metro, Dhaka Metro, and Jakarta MRT, bolsters the firm’s standing in the region, where governments are increasingly investing in advanced mobility, urban transit, and sustainable transport infrastructure.

The Dubai contract further solidifies L&T’s position in West Asia, as the company anticipates a surge in railway-development opportunities across the Gulf Cooperation Council region in the forthcoming years.
