Keyless access systems continue to pose a security risk for numerous vehicle models, according to the ADAC's ten-year review of its Keyless tests. Nearly half of the examined cars could still be opened using an artificially extended radio signal, and one-third allowed the testers to start the engine. The automotive club's database now contains over 850 vehicles.

While the situation has improved in recent years, some manufacturers have upgraded their systems to the comparatively secure Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology. These vehicles detect the presence of the key based on signal travel time and lock automatically if the key is not within immediate proximity. Other brands still rely on older systems that can be bypassed through a relay attack, where criminals extend the radio connection between the vehicle and the key over hundreds of meters, through walls or doors.

Once the engine is started, the car can usually be moved without further presence of the key until the fuel tank or drive battery is empty. The ADAC particularly criticizes Aiways, Alfa Romeo, Alpine, BYD, Chevrolet, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Honda, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jeep, KGM/Ssangyong, Lynk&Co, MG, and Opel, none of whose tested vehicles were adequately protected.

Even key fobs with built-in motion sensors are unreliable, staying vulnerable for a time after the last use. Vehicle owners with unprotected systems can check if they can disable the keyless function via the car's menu or manufacturer instructions. A shielded key case or closed metal box can block the radio signal. The ADAC also advises consumers to inquire about the keyless system's use of UWB technology when purchasing a vehicle, or to forego the convenience feature if uncertain.
