Jaguars Reveal Early Plans for Travis Hunter’s Two-Way Role

The Jacksonville Jaguars have outlined their intended two-way role for rookie wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, but the execution thus far has not matched the team's claims. Multiple sources in Jacksonville have reported that Hunter has been primarily utilized on defense, positioning him as the primary strong safety, a role highlighted by Jaguars onSI's John Shipley.

This shift aligns with the team's depth chart, where Hunter is listed as a starting cornerback and backup wide receiver. However, this allocation of Hunter's talents appears to be a missed opportunity, considering his dual capabilities demonstrated in the past. During the previous season, Hunter made significant plays on defense while also contributing as a solid wide receiver, amassing 28 catches for 298 yards and a touchdown in seven games before undergoing season-ending knee surgery.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has acknowledged that Hunter's practice routine may not fully reflect his on-field duties, suggesting the coaching staff prefers Hunter to focus on defensive strategies and mental preparation rather than transitioning to offensive assignments. This perspective suggests a belief in Hunter's greater defensive impact compared to offensive contributions.

As the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Hunter showcased his athletic prowess with 153 catches for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdowns on offense, and 66 tackles, a forced fumble, 16 pass deflections, and seven interceptions on defense during his college career at Jackson State (2022) and Colorado (2023-24).
