Israel warns Turkey against 'dangerous adventures in Syria'

Tensions between Israel and Turkey, two prominent US allies in the Middle East, have escalated following an Israeli air raid on a crucial airbase in northern Syria. This development highlights ongoing geopolitical disputes in the region since President Bashar Al Assad's ousting in December 2024. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of pushing Turkey towards dangerous actions in Syria, asserting Israel's resolve to defend itself against any threats.

The Turkish presidency dismissed the Israeli allegations as baseless and potentially legitimising Israel's unauthorized action at Abu Al Duhur base. Both nations maintain a presence in Syria, with Turkish troops stationed in the north and Israeli forces in the south, crossing an armistice line near the Golan Heights following Assad's removal.

Israel launched the attack on the airbase in Idlib, causing no casualties, which is located 20km from Aleppo. The base, situated near the ancient city, was primarily engaged in restoring facilities. Despite Syrian officials informing Israel prior to the strike about the base's restoration plans, Turkish officials visited the site days before the Israeli assault.

Israeli officials claim Turkey intends to expand its military presence beyond the established control zone in Syria during the civil war. The US has attempted to establish a protocol among Turkey, Syria, and Israel to prevent further escalation; however, peace efforts between Syria and Israel have stalled, with Turkey-Israel relations deteriorating since 2020 over issues in Palestine, Lebanon, and Israel's involvement in Syria.

The Abu Al Duhur base, with its extensive runway capable of accommodating diverse aircraft, was previously used as headquarters for the 25th Special Mission Forces Division, known as Tiger forces, which had significant ties with Russia.
