Immigration suspends driver after fatal Maju Junction crash that killed three pedestrians

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has put a stop to the duties of the driver of a lorry involved in a fatal accident at the Maju Junction traffic lights. The crash resulted in the death of three family members and left another pedestrian seriously injured. Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban stated that this action was taken to allow for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The department is also committed to full cooperation with the police and is conducting an internal investigation to ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs). According to the incident report, the accident occurred around 1am yesterday when an empty lorry, en route to Chow Kit for an illegal immigrant operation, entered a traffic light intersection while the light was red, using its beacon and siren.

The lorry collided with a Proton Saga that had the green light, causing it to lose control and collide with a pedestrian and an Inokom Matrix car. The case is now being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
