Immigration “Black Maria” lorry driver suspended after crash kills father, 2 daughters in KL

An Immigration Department lorry involved in a crash that killed a father and his two daughters in Kuala Lumpur has seen its driver suspended pending investigation. Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, director-general of the Immigration Department, confirmed the driver's suspension while the department conducts an internal review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) compliance.

The crash occurred at Maju Junction traffic lights in Jalan Sultan Ismail at around 1 am, claiming the lives of Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaikh Yahya, 53, and his daughters Siti Nor Sazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisya Auni, 12. The unladen lorry was reportedly en route to Chow Kit from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office, carrying out an operation targeting undocumented migrants.

Police investigations revealed that the lorry entered the junction against a red traffic light, while a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man was proceeding through the junction when the light was green. The collision caused the lorry to lose control and strike four pedestrians, resulting in the deaths of three victims and injuries to another.

A witness, Faiz Hussamuddin, said he witnessed the crash and is prepared to provide a statement to the police. Police are conducting a thorough investigation, gathering CCTV footage, speaking with witnesses, and inspecting the involved vehicles.
