GMTF, Atlantic Lifesciences explore local production of cancer, heart medicines to cut treatment costs

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) is partnering with Atlantic Lifesciences Limited and the PharmaNova Group to manufacture critical medicines for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and other chronic conditions locally. The collaboration aims to lower treatment costs for thousands of Ghanaians and reduce the country's dependence on expensive imported medicines.

GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku led a team to inspect Atlantic Lifesciences' facilities and assess manufacturing capabilities. Discussions centered on affordable healthcare, reducing the financial burden of imported drugs, and improving access to life-saving medicines. The initiative aligns with government efforts to strengthen Ghana's pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity and build a more resilient healthcare system.

Atlantic Lifesciences CEO Dhanankay Tripathi emphasized identifying gaps in Ghana's healthcare system and developing practical solutions to address patients' needs. The partnership supports the GMTF's strategy of working with pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and organizations to mobilize expertise, resources, and innovative solutions in combating chronic diseases.

The ultimate goal is to reduce treatment costs, expand access to life-saving medicines, and ensure that support for more patients can be provided through the initiative.
