Ex-Zambian minister killed during security raid – Police

A former Zambian minister, Mutotwe Kafwaya, was killed during a security raid on a property connected to opposition leader Brian Mundubile, police have confirmed. The incident occurred in Lusaka on Friday, the day after Zambia's presidential election. The raid, carried out by a joint security task force, resulted in the arrest of 11 people and the recovery of firearms.

Police stated that the exchange of fire between law enforcement officers and unknown individuals led to Kafwaya's fatal injury. Mundubile, who has gone into hiding, dismissed the allegations of his political alliance's involvement in insurgency and militia activity as "total fabrications." The 49-year-old served as Minister of Works and Supply and later as Minister of Transport and Communications under former President Edgar Lungu.

He plans to challenge the election result in court, alleging irregularities. The United Nations human rights chief and the European Union election observation mission have expressed concern over the election process and the treatment of opposition figures.
