Energy Committee yet to receive July 29 blackout report – Adomako-Mensah

Collins Adomako-Mensah, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, has expressed frustration that his committee has not received the full report on a nationwide power outage that occurred on July 29, 2026. Despite GRIDCo indicating that the report was submitted to the Energy Minister, the committee members have only seen commentaries on the report through social media and news platforms.

This lack of access to the full report makes it challenging for Parliament to independently evaluate the findings. GRIDCo had previously testified before the Energy Committee regarding an audit report, during which the committee questioned the findings linked to the July 29 blackout. The company informed the committee that the report had been submitted to the Minister and ruled out sabotage as the cause of the incident.

However, Adomako-Mensah believes that the committee needs the complete report to fully understand the cause of the outage and determine if the recommended corrective measures have been implemented. The recurrence of major power disruptions within a month of each other has raised serious concerns about Ghana's power system's stability and resilience, according to Adomako-Mensah.

He emphasized the urgency for Parliament to call for clear answers from GRIDCo and the Energy Minister. Adomako-Mensah expects the committee to invite GRIDCo and the Minister to testify before them when Parliament reconvenes on Monday, August 24, for urgent legislative business. He stressed that while power was restored quickly, the recurrence of nationwide disruptions necessitates urgent attention to avoid further failures.
