Employees Say Title Inflation Often Comes Without Corresponding Pay Rise: Survey

A recent survey reveals that a majority of India's professionals feel their job titles do not accurately represent their pay, creating a significant gap between recognition and financial rewards. Indeed, a job search platform, reports that 80% of professionals believe title inflation is common across industries, with employees receiving senior-sounding titles without corresponding pay raises.

According to Sashi Kumar, Managing Director of Indeed India, titles remain valuable as they signal opportunity and capability but should accurately reflect career progression to avoid becoming merely symbolic. The survey indicates that employees are prioritizing compensation over title changes. Nearly one-third of professionals who received a new title in the last two years said it did not come with a salary increase or only resulted in a less than 5% raise.

Moreover, 52% of professionals would prioritize a higher salary over a better job title when considering a new job. While titles help professionals signal seniority and open future opportunities, compensation is still viewed as a crucial measure of career value. Despite this, employees still place significant importance on designations.

Around 70% of professionals believe their title influences future career opportunities, and 73% think a stronger designation enhances their appeal to prospective employers. Designations also impact job satisfaction, with 57% of employees stating that their designation significantly affects their overall job satisfaction. From an employer's perspective, 57% use senior-sounding or enhanced job titles to attract or retain talent, particularly when salary budgets are limited.

The perception gap between employers and employees is evident. While companies may view titles as a means of acknowledging talent, professionals associate meaningful career progression more closely with financial growth. As India's labor market evolves, career progression may increasingly be evaluated based on a combination of designation, responsibilities, and compensation rather than solely based on a change in job title.
