ECG invests GH¢710,965 in infrastructure replacement across Greater Accra

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) invested GH¢710,965 in infrastructure replacement across Greater Accra during the first half of the year. This expenditure came about following complaints from customers, interventions by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and ECG's commitment to improving service delivery. Greater Regional Manager of PURC, Madam Gifty Bruce-Nelson, disclosed these figures to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the Mid-Year Performance Review of the utilities.

In the first and second quarters of the year, 986 complaints were lodged against ECG and its partner, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). Out of these, 972 complaints, representing approximately 99 percent, were resolved. The majority of the complaints, about 787, were made against ECG, while 169 were against GWCL, and 30 were made against ECG by its customers. The PURC attributed the high resolution rate to the mutual understanding among the parties involved.

To protect the interests of both consumers and utility service providers, credit adjustments were made in favor of consumers, totalling GH¢105,273.50. ECG alone adjusted GH¢1,921.18 and GH¢103,352.32 in the first and second quarters, respectively. These adjustments were made following investigations into disputed bills and overbilling complaints.

The complaints mainly concerned the quality of service and billing for ECG and burst pipes and no-flow of water for GWCL. Most of these complaints were received through PURC's WhatsApp platform, where Assembly Members were active, and customers submitted their issues, which were then forwarded to the platform.
