Death Toll in Russia’s Overnight Attack on Kyiv Rises to 16

Russian forces conducted a major attack on Kyiv overnight, resulting in at least 16 fatalities and 41 injuries, according to the latest update. The combined missile and drone assault damaged residential buildings, a children's hospital, a school, and other civilian infrastructure throughout the Ukrainian capital. The State Emergency Service reported that the death toll climbed from 15 to 16 on Thursday, August 20, at approximately 6:20 p.m., following the discovery of an additional victim.

The number of injured victims increased from 39 to 41, with two people sustaining injuries after drone debris struck an office building in the Holosiivskyi district. Emergency crews continued their efforts at a strike site in the Solomianskyi district, where a nine-story residential building and adjacent homes sustained damage. The toll might rise further as emergency services remain at the affected locations, evaluating the overall extent of the destruction.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that residents in the Desnianskyi district and portions of the Dniprovskyi district may experience disruptions in hot-water supply following the attack. Separately, Klitschko stated on Thursday that Russian attacks have damaged roughly 4,000 of Kyiv's 12,000 buildings, or about one in three. The capital continues to prepare shelters and seeks funding to prepare for the approaching winter season, with plans to deploy mobile shelters in the city's most critical locations by the end of the year.
