Casper Kelly’s Horror Movie Buddy Is Getting a Retro Game Boy Color Game

Casper Kelly's upcoming mascot horror movie Buddy is getting an authentic Game Boy Color video game tie-in later this year.

Casper Kelly’s Horror Movie Buddy Is Getting a Retro Game Boy Color Game

IGN has exclusively revealed that the survival horror movie Buddy will be getting a throwback video game tie-in, fully compatible with GameBoy Color. Buddy, the bright orange unicorn from the classic children's television show, stars in It's Buddy, where children sing, dance, and help the unicorn spread happiness. However, one child refuses to play along, causing Buddy to become displeased and cracks to appear in the otherwise perfect world.

Developed by playinstinct and published by ModRetro, the game, titled Buddy: The Video Game, is set for a Q4 2026 release on the ModRetro Chromatic. The game blends survival horror, visual novel storytelling, and show-themed mini games. Buddy's director, Casper Kelly, and co-writer Jamie King, have crafted a game that captures the film's tension, with modes that range from living out the movie's storyline to escaping from Buddy in Survival Mode.

In Buddy Mode, players can take control of Buddy himself, hunting down fleeing children and enforcing the rules of the show. Mini Game Mode provides a break from the horror with cheerful show-themed mini games, including dancing, dusting, painting, riding, and batting. Casper Kelly, known for Too Many Cooks, directed the movie and co-wrote the screenplay with Jamie King.

The film stars Keegan-Michael Key as Buddy, alongside Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, Michael Shannon, and Patton Oswalt. Buddy is set to open in theaters on August 28, 2026, from Roadside Attractions and Saban Films.
